I'm a teenage girl who's just trying to understand life. I don't know where i belong. I need to get away. I'll grab my bag and my book and you do the same. Let's go together. Somewhere new, just me and you. Let's live.
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS….go with a list. This might seem contrary to the treasure hunting of thrifting, but creating a list can keep you focused. Need housewares? What kind? Bowls, knick knacks, mirrors, furniture to upcycle? Make a note of what you’re looking for, it will help keep you focused on what you really need. If you’re looking for clothes, make a list of what you need and what fabrics, colors or styles you love. Always on my list? Leather, faux fur and chiffon.
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS…. dress accordingly. Most (good) thrifts dont have fitting rooms so leggings or tights are a lifesaver. A dress can help you slip on pants easily, and a tank top underneath a shirt can help you stay modest in the aisles of Goodwill. Also, white in general is not the best choice because thrifts stores are pretty dirty. :)
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS…. know your stores. My favorite store has 50% and 75% deals everyday, but most other stores in the area have half-off days or student discount days. Find out what your discount days are. Call ahead or stop in, but waiting for the sale will save you big bucks. This is especially important if you’re buying furniture. Go early on the sale day with cash, it wont be there long.
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS….take your time. If you’re hitting a thrift store, make it count. I take the time to scan every shelve, aisle, rack, nook and cranny. You might have to move several old school chairs to get the the amazing mid-century desk! You will have to dig, embrace it, be prepared to get kind of dirty and have to sort through a lot of creepy stuffed animals to find a thrifted gem.
Lastly, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS…. be creative. Old mans 80 leather bomber that doesn’t fit in the arms? Who cares? Belt it over a body con dress. Old particleboard nightstand? Paint it and it’s your personalized entry table. Beautiful lace curtains? Cut them up and make it a table runner. Pastel needlepoint art? Conversation piece!
